In order to promote Fantasy Islands, we're going to begin randomly holding events! You heard right! We're just going to be randomly giving out free stuff! As such, these events will be announced one month before they are going to happen. During the day the event happens on (or the days), you can claim one Pokémon. Note that the day works on GMT time.

If you have any problems getting to the event, you are allowed to ask another trainer to pick up the Pokémon for you. However, you are unable to claim two Pokémon, so anyone you ask is unable to get themselves the free Pokémon. Note that, unless stated, you must buy a Poké Ball from the Mart in order to claim these Pokémon - the rules of the mart state you'd need to buy one anyway.

Please note:- in order to qualify for these events, trainers must have defeated the elite four in one of the specific regions. The most common region you need to complete is Sinnoh, but Kanto and Hoenn may also be asked for. Johto will never be asked for (due to the fact that completition of Johto would include defeating Red - a feat which would take a long time).

Welcome to the Rocket Game Corner! Here, you can use your coins to play a number of fun games, with the chance of earning more for your winnings! Are you ready to play? The Rocket Game Corner does not deal with people who have gambling addictions. Instead, we urge you to play some more and earn lots more money! Yay!

Slot Machines A
As such, trainers can use one to three coins on the Slot Machine. The more coins put in, the higher your chances of winning. Prizes (excluding winning nothing) range from 2 - 15 (1 coin used), 6 - 100 (2 coins used) and 8 - 300 (3 coins used). On top of that, the chance of earning 0 is 75% with 1 coin, 25% with two coins, and 15% with three coins!

Slot Machines B
The same as the original slot machines. One to three coins can again be used. The prizes are 6 - 10 (1 coin used), 8 - 15 (2 coins used) or 10 - 300 (3 coins used). The chances of earning 0 are exactly the same as the original slot machine. The prizes are just slightly different.

Slot Machines C
The same as the previous two. One to three coins can again be used. Prizes are 3 - 6 coins (1 coin used, including replay and power), 2 - 90 coins (2 coins used) or 6 - 300 (3 coins used). Note that replay will result in your getting another shot, power will result in the 3 coins won being instantly used again.

Roulette Wheels
There are two Roulette Wheels - one with 1 coin pay and one with 3 coin pay (note that on special days, the 1 coin pay is changed to 6 coin pay). The more correct guess you make on a colour (orange, green and purple), the higher the amount of money earnt!

Writing New Trainers

(Crossposted to PFU)

The infamous topic that's nearly obligatory on every Pokémon fanfiction forum is how to write a new trainer story. You know, the ones that start off with a trainer receiving their first Pokémon and heading out on his or her own journey into the great unknown.

Since the birth of Pokémon, there have been fans who have wanted to imagine their own trainers heading off into a fantastic adventure. So, naturally, for about a decade, one would imagine that there's been every possible angle for a new trainer story. Yet, even so, some elements just scream "cliché." Those are the elements that, regardless of the story, always seem to raise the red flags in a reader's mind because fifty million other fics out there have done it – or so the reader thinks.

For years, I've considered writing a list of all of these clichés (not even a guide -- just a list to keep myself amused), but honestly, I really don't have the time or the motivation to do it, not to mention that's been done by other writers (and subsequently argued by other reviewers). So, instead, I thought about how many writers we have right here, and I decided to do things a little differently.

Every week, I'll put up a new topic that progresses through the typical path of a new trainer story or brings up a new element. Those are your boundaries, and you're free to talk about anything regarding them. You're free to point out what you think are clichés, suggest ways to avoid them, or provide examples of stories that avoid them completely. You're also free to discuss past topics, but remember that the focus for each week should be the new one that I bring up.

If you need help figuring out what to write about, I'll also post a short prompt – a definition of the topic and a few questions or notes of my own.

Most of all, just have fun with this one and try to help each other out. You're here to define what it means to write a new trainer story, but be open to what other people offer as their own opinions as well.

That having been said…

Week #1 (6/16/08): The Beginning

So, every story has a beginning. We're talking about the events where the character wakes up and gets all revved up to go, but they haven't received their Pokémon yet. We all know that waking up late a la Ash is a notorious cliché, but why do you think that's considered a bad thing for the remainder of the story? Also, if it's a cliché, how would you recommend avoiding it?

Additionally, you may want to discuss how to establish the setting, introduce the character, and avoid other clichés (like the constant use of bacon or eggs as the breakfast item of choice) in the opening few pages of the fic.

Personally, I just don't understand why it's so necessary for a fic to begin with the trainer waking up. Surely not every trainer gets his or her Pokémon in the morning.

Welcome to the Move Tutor! The Move Tutor is your one-stop shop for anything which you want to teach your Pokemon which it cannot learn through levelling up, TMs, HMs or any other similar means. Of course, certain moves come at a price, but we're about to get onto that! Pokemon can learn any Move Tutor move they could learn in any of the games.

Money Moves
For $4000, we teach Pokemon Flamethrower, Ice Beam or Thunderbolt, as long as they could learn one of the three from the Move Tutor in Pokemon Crystal. So, we won't be teaching any Generation III or IV Pokemon any of these three move tutor moves any time soon.

Battle Point Moves
Gain BP in your adventures in Hoenn and Sinnoh, and we'll teach your Pokemon special BP moves. These are the moves learnt at the Battle Frontier in Pokemon Emerald. As such, no Generation IV Pokemon can learn any of the moves which are gained through BP.

Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn and Hydro Cannon
If you have one of the starter Pokemon at maximum happiness and their final stage, we will teach them their version of the three elemental Hyper Beams (Venusaur, Meganium, Sceptile and Torterra get Frenzy Plant, Charizard, Typhlosion, Blaziken and Infernape get Blast Burn, Blastoise, Feraligatr, Swampert and Empoleon get Hydro Cannon).

Draco Meteor
As such, we will teach any dragon-type Pokemon which have maximum happiness Draco Meteor. It doesn't matter who the dragon-type is, so long as they are dragon-type (they also don't need to be fully evolved - we'll teach a Bagon Draco Meteor just like a Salamence).

Other Moves
Any other Move Tutor move from the games can be taught to the Pokemon which could learn it in the games (the ones from XD: Gale of Darkness in Agate, the move tutors in Hoenn - excluding the Battle Frontier - and the various move tutors in Kanto in FireRed and LeafGreen).

The Pokemon Daycare is the place to come to if you want to train any of your Pokemon, or you want to breed your Pokemon to result in you getting a Pokemon egg which you can hatch into a new Pokemon for your team! It's two different jobs, and we don't even ask for you to pay up front - you pay when you collect (but if you can't pay, you can't get them out!).

When you try to take a Pokemon out, it costs $100, plus an extra $100 for every 24 hours which have passed since then. So, if you've dropped it off for a week, it'll cost $800 to take the Pokemon back from the daycare. However, if you drop off a Pokemon and it reaches Level 100, we won't charge any extra from it reaching that level (dropping off a Level 100 Pokemon will only result in you paying the initial $100).

Please note, however, that any Pokemon which you actually drop off in the daycare will not evolve. On top of that, whenever they learn a new move, we will automatically overwrite one of your other moves (excluding Level-Up moves - if you only have Level-Up moves, you're next move taught to the Pokémon will be automatically cancelled, so be careful!).

However, we're still good, because we can help train up your weak Pokemon! Just make sure you make a mental note of when you need to take it out (just before it evolves or learns a move), make sure you have the money, and then drop it off! It's useful for Pokemon like Magikarp which are incredibly hard to level-up through battling! We do all the hard work!

Note that you can drop a maximum of 2 Pokemon off, and if they like each other, they may produce a Pokemon egg, which is yours for free. Note that the 2 Pokemon must be paid for each - if you drop two in for eight days, it's $900 for each Pokemon, not $900 to take both Pokemon out of the daycare! You don't need to pay for the egg however.

Note that if you drop a shadow Pokemon off, we'll take the shadow down till you only need to battle with it once. After this point, we'll act like the Pokemon is Level 100. Note that using this method will mean that the Pokemon will not learn any new moves however - so it's not the best method to try and remove the shadow from the Pokemon!

To start it off, I'd like to give Zenig a nature. As such, I'd like to give him the Bold nature (+ Defense, - Attack).

The Service Counter is another of the coin-based shops we have. Again, to use this (like any other coin-based shop), you need to have found the Coin Case in any of the main locations (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh). As such, the Service Counter will sell you coins - kind of like a currency converter, changing your money for coins for absolutely nothing!

As such, we sell:
50 Coins for $1000
500 Coins for $10000
It's up to you how many coins you want to buy, so eat your heart out with the coins you can get!

As such, you can own more than one Coin Case, which determines how many coins you can actually hold. For the Coin Cases found in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, you can hold 9999 coins in each (making a total of 29997 coins for owning all three, or 19998 for owning two), and 50000 for finding the one in Sinnoh (making a total of 79997 coins overall).

As such, this is also similar to a bank-type shop, in that you must record the amount of coins you've actually used here. As such, once a member gets the Coin Case, they must create an account here, where they are given 10 free coins to get them started, after which you've got to just get yourself the rest of the coins through gambling or buying them.

Account Details:
At the moment, no one has found a Coin Case, so no one is actually able to have an account at the Service Counter. Would you like to start gambling? Well, head over to Kanto, Johto, Hoenn or Sinnoh and start looking for that Coin Case to get yourself in here!

So, basically, the situation is this:

I have a domain that we're moving to, but space is another story. Our new host has run into a bunch of problems with the server, so I'm not entirely sure when we'll actually be moving. All I can do is keep in touch with him (or, rather, Camisado will for me because she's awesome) and wait for an OK to start transferring things over to the new domain.

Until then, since this is taking a bit longer than I'd anticipated, I'm coming back to advertise, help finish up the ASB, and fix up the forums. I'm really sorry about my recent inactivity. My original plan was to hold off on anything new until we transferred over to the new space.

But what's past is past, so I hope there's still people around to pick up Firefly and put it back together. ^_^;

Ooer, my first publicly posted fanfiction in possibly a year.

I hope you, the reader, enjoy this story as much as I have so far enjoyed planning and writing it. Any constructive criticism and comments are much appreciated, as I have not submitted my work to the public – at least not outside my friends-only journal – in a long time.

I'm not sure this is long enough for a chapter. What do you guys think? It's about a page and a half in NeoOffice Writer...

--

The distinction between climate and weather is one of scale. Weather refers to the state of the atmosphere at a local level, usually on a short time scaled of minutes to months. It emphasises aspects of the atmosphere that affect human activity – such as sunshine, cloud, wind, rainfall and temperature.

Climate is concerned with the long-term behaviour of the atmosphere in a specific area. Climatic characteristics are represented by data on temperature, pressure, wind, precipitation, humidity, etc. which are used to calculate daily, monthly and yearly averages and to build up global patterns.

Melody had read every book and paper on oceanography and meteorology she could get her hands on. She'd even contacted the Weather Institute in Hoenn, visited Professor Ivy on Valencia Island, and coerced Professor Oak's videophone number out of an unwilling Misty Waterflower. That incident was the reason she'd taken up Physical Geography at school and later at college – trying to prove it wrong, trying to prove there was a logical explanation.

Nothing. Nothing she found could disprove the fact that Legendary Pokémon were indeed responsible for the known world's climate. How did people that had never seen them believe in this? Or the people that had no idea what it was like to be at the centre of the ecological disaster ten years ago?

Sighing, Melody kicked her heels against the shrine's granite pedestal below her and looked out over the ocean towards the three islands facing Shamouti's cove. The sun was starting to set, bathing the water and islands in a rich gold, and sending shadows of silhouettes across the ocean surface. A silhouette of Zapdos's barren, dead shield volcano and its deep caldera. A silhouette of Moltres' perpetually active stratovolcano. And between them, casting the longest shadow of all, a frosty mountain stranded in the centre of a tropical archipelago, inhabited by Articuno.

Melody had watched them fighting, and their power terrified her. Never again did she want the guardian, Lugia – beautiful and awe-inspiring as he was – to be called forth to stop them.

Never again should the world be turned upside down due to the interference of humans.

Human interference was exactly what had happened. Had that collector not tried to remove Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno – ultimately Lugia – from their natural habitats, the balance would not have been thrown. Furthermore, what if the Chosen One hadn't happened to have turned up just in time for the festival?

Then again, Melody figured, it probably wouldn't have happened if he hadn't turned up. The legend said it would happen, and probably only with everything in place as necessary.

This was precisely where Melody had got with trying to find a logical explanation for the occurrences: nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. Her thoughts simply went around in circles. Was it the fault of placing nature's balance in the hands of Legendary Pokémon? Or was it the fault of the humans for feeling they had to interfere? Or, just by chance, was it simply coincidence that the imbalance in the climate had happened at the same time as the Legendaries being collected?

On the bright side, at least the whole ordeal had given her excellent material for her last meteorology assignment and rewarded her with a useful qualification; though, if she was honest, she'd not given a passing thought to what she was going to do now she'd left college. Even the Hoenn Weather Institute had failed to interest her. Melody might like to travel, but she had no inclination of ever permanently leaving the Orange Islands, even if she moved from Shamouti Island.

Melody heaved an impressive sigh as the sun finally disappeared from view, and jumped down from the pedestal to start her climb back up to the main island and to the home she shared with her older sister and grandfather. She considered somewhat absent-mindedly that the annual Shamouti Legend Festival would take place in less than two months, and it was her final year as the Festival Maiden. Practice should probably be in order to make sure it was her best ever performance. It took her mind off obsessing over all her dilemmas, anyway.

As coincidence would have it, a ship silently appeared on the horizon as she turned away; unbeknownst to Melody and the other inhabitants of Shamouti and the Orange archipelago, something big was about to begin.

Approval Tower

Welcome to FFASBL! If you're an aspiring new trainer wanting to join the challenging league of Fire Fly, please sign in here.

But first, ask yourself a question, have you familiarized yourself with the rules of the ASB and have at least somewhat of an understanding how ASB works. If you're completely clueless, do not attempt to join. Feel free to ask any questions you can't find answered in these topics at the Q&A Tower. If you understand the rules you may make an application to the league here. What you should include in the application is the Pokemon you choose in the beginning with this format:

[Pokemon Name][Gender][Species]
Level: [Level]
Ability/ies: [Ability1] / [Ability2]
Known TMs/HMs: [Move1], [Move2]

For example:

Reaper (F) Absol
Level: 10
Ability: Super Luck / Pressure
Known TMs/HMs: Snatch, Will-O-Wisp

Stuff to remember when making the first application:

- The beginning level of your Pokemon will be 10, not 5 like in games.
- When picking your "Known TMs/HMs": remember that one of the two you're allowed to pick has to be corresponding to the Pokemon's type (i.e. Snatch).
- Remember that you can only spend up to six rarity points in your team. Absol represents four rarity points, so I can now pick only Pokemon that have two or one rarity point. If you go above the six allowed rarity points, you will not be approved.

In future, when your Pokemon gains something that has to be reported, you come to this topic and make a new sheet for that respective Pokemon and link to the place where the event took place. Reportable stuff are:

- Learning new TMs/HMs or Move Tutor moves
- Attaching a hold item
- Gaining a signature move
- Gaining a signature ability
- Gaining experience or levels
- Evolving
- Enhancing Pokemon's status (Calcium, Iron)

For example:

Reaper (F) Absol
Level: 11
Experience: 340/350
Hold Item: Leftovers
Ability: Super Luck / Pressure
Known TMs/HMs: Snatch, Will-O-Wisp, Endure

Changes happened:

Gained experience and leveled up here [insert link to battle]. The referee to verify this is [insert the referee of that battle].

Bought a TM here [insert link to shop] and used it on Reaper to learn Endure.

Added Hold Item (Leftovers) I gained from Lady Jax from the Christmas Tree [insert link to Christmas Tree].

Note that you can string multiple events into one approval, like here with experience and buying/using of TM/HM and attaching an item. Whenever you finish a battle or otherwise use item to gain experience, report it here. In the case of battles, the referee must verify that the experience gained is correct before the change can be recorded to the Trainer Registry. Remember, if you haven't reported you have used a TM on your Pokemon, you cannot use it any battles. If you have reported you have used a TM on your Pokemon, you have to wait untill it's acknowledged by the approvers and your Pokemon's status is updated in the Trainer Registry. Before that, you will be unable to use that TM.

You also always need to get new Pokemon approved. So if you catch a new one, you need to come here and fill the sheet to get it approved too.

More to come inc. signature move rules etc.
